About the Great Turkey Fumble

This isn’t your average 5k run/1k walk. By combining two Thanksgiving traditions; a charity 5k/1k on Thanksgiving morning with the traditional love affair of Thanksgiving Day football, Newberg’s only Thanksgiving Day Run is sure to be a hit.

The Great Turkey Fumble possess multiple benefits: 1) providing support for the Newberg community through the financial and non-perishable food aid; 2) creating a family-fun event that is enjoyable for multiple ages on a day that celebrates family and; 3) promoting a healthy life-style on a day that often is a day of sitting and eating for most.

Benefiting Newberg FISH Emergency Food Service

While the event has many positive outcomes, the biggest is the financial and food support raised through this event. We have to stop here and take a minute to thank our sponsors, who contributed greatly to the efforts of Newberg FISH in big ways, especially Bert's Chuckwagon, who agreed to be the Title Sponsor for the event and is a huge reason we were are able to do this:

Newberg FISH focuses its efforts on providing emergency food services, as well as cooperating with other local agencies to help people meet other critical needs such as housing, medical and dental care, and job placement. Newberg FISH staff members are 100% volunteer, as they have been since their founding in 1970.

Last year, Newberg FISH assisted 16,388 people (average 1,366 each month) and 4,648 households (average 387 each month). 2015 marks their 45th anniversary.

Race Details

Runners and walkers will begin at Newberg High School Football Field and run until they successfully catch the football-collecting-turkey, where they will retrieve a football. Not only will they carry and use that football with them the remaining for the race, but that football is their’s to keep!

Before returning to Newberg High School, runners will complete their three football skills challenges:

  • “Turkey Back Throwing Challenge"

  • “Wide Pilgrim Catching Challenge”

  • “Kick It On the Mayflower Kicking Challenge.”

Get more details about the football challenges by visiting "The Football Challenges" page.
